The 2nd Generation Volvo XC60 is on the roads! It is the safest car ever, but, can it tow?
The original Volvo XC60 has aged well.
In an industry in which brief product life cycles have become typical, Volvo's mid-sized SUV has lasted for nearly a decade.
The Volvo XC60 is the safest car ever to hit Australian roads, with a range of features comprising Steer Assist and Oncoming Lane Mitigation with the option of Pilot Assist. This last feature operates at speeds of up to 130km/h and keeps the XC60 on course, taking care of steering, acceleration and braking on properly marked roads. Oncoming Lane Mitigation warns the driver and provides active steering input to reduce the severity of head-on collisions, or preferably avoid them altogether. This system operates in a speed range from 60 to 140km/h.
The European crash safety body awarded the XC60 the 98 percent for adult occupancy, 87 percent for child protection, 76 percent for pedestrian impact and 95 percent for safety assistance systems – the highest scores ever recorded by Euro NCAP. Euro NCAP declares Volvo XC60 safest car ever!
The new XC60 also has ‘Clean-Zone’ climate control (four zones that remove harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin to deliver “Scandinavian-fresh” air on the inside), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Here's what Kevin McCann, MD of Volvo Australia has to say about the NEW XC60:
“Volvo has a strong heritage in designing stylish and dynamic SUVs that offer the latest in technology. The All-New XC60 is no exception, even by our already high standards”
“The exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology – all perfectly blended together”.
The XC60 follows on the same interior design theme of the XC90 SUV and S90/V90 saloon and estate. That means quality is superb, from the soft leather to the wood or metal inserts and crisp displays of the TFT screens that are used for the (optional) digital instruments and (standard) 9-inch vertical touchscreen.
At 4688mm long, 2117mm wide and 1658mm high, the new XC60 is a little longer and wider than the old car, but lower. Its 2865mm wheelbase is about 90mm longer, promising more rear legroom, while the 505-litre cargo space is slightly greater than before.
The latest XC60 continues Volvo’s run of building cars that are practical and safe as well as extremely desirable. If you prefer a sporty drive a Jaguar F-Pace is a better car, while the Audi Q5 can ultimately be more comfortable, but for something that feels of very high quality and a little different from the norm, the XC60 comes highly recommended and is probably the best car of its size to have a crash in.
Can the new Volvo XC60 tow? Maximum XC60 tow rating is 2400kgs, with 140kgs on the ball/nose. Each model varies so check your owners manual. Good news is that even the Hybrid T8 has a tow rating.
