Many modern EUROPEAN vehicles require a bypass relay for the towbar electrics to work correctly. 

If you vehicle requires this relay then damage can occur to the cars electrics if one isn't fitted (Most post 2004 vehicles with Canbus wiring).

The 13 way bypass relay may be used on European vehicles. This includes those that require a simple bypass function for circuit protection or to avoid confusing the bulb failure systems right through to those with part or full multiplexed and CANbus systems . Some vehicles will work without the relay but as soon as you put a lot of load on the vehicles lighting circuits they will shut down.

The bypass is designed to switch power directly from the towing vehicle to the trailer or caravan road lights using very small signals from the towing vehicles road lights system, without the towing vehicles check control sensory systems being adversely affected. 

As car systems are getting more and more complicated, it is becoming vitally important to protect against faults and damage to the car system. For older vehicle models the towbar wiring works by connecting each wire from the towbar socket to a point on the vehicle, and subsequently taking power from each point to power the trailer lights.

To ensure these problems do not arise, it is essential on modern vehicles to fit a bypass relay when using universal wiring. The relay basically fits between the towbar wiring and the vehicle wiring and prevents too much current being taken from the vehicle to the trailer, which is compensated for through a direct feed from the car battery. We always fit bypass relays when necessary.

Since around the year 2004 vehicle manufacturers have been making vehicle lighting systems more complicated, requiring the use of by-pass relays when fitting universal electrical kits. It started with vehicles such as BMW, Mercedes and Audi and is now present in over 60% of new vehicles. Most of these are European vehicles, Far East and North American vehicles are now starting to require the by-pass relay.

Universal towbar wiring does provide all the lighting functions that are needed to keep you legal while towing your trailer or caravan.
