The new X1 (U11) model has undergone a complete makeover that gives the small SUV a comprehensive upgrade, with improvements to its chassis, powertrain, and interior.

Noticeable is the larger kidney grille, the headlights are thinner than before too, and come with full LED technology as standard. The front bumper changes as you go up the range, with black trim on the sportier models.  The rear sees more angular-looking tail lights with a cutout around the boot lid.

A more powerful 4-cylinder engine is now available if the turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine is not enough for you.  Notice the larger kidney grille. The  X1's larger exterior dimensions mean there is more interior space for passengers and cargo than the previous generation F48.  The 3rd Gen X1 is 53mm longer, 24mm wider and 44mm taller than its predecessor on a 22mm longer wheelbase. There’s also 35L more boot space with the second row up.

The new larger engine now has 241 horsepower, 13 more than the 2nd gen. All-wheel drive is standard as is a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The refreshed power allows the new X1 to reach 100kms/h in 6.2 seconds. Additionally, the X1’s suspension has been redesigned to improve handling and stability and a refreshed interior awaits. 

The X1 receives the brand new BMW Operating System 8 and the Curved Display, which features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system in one display.   BMW wants you to control most of the car’s functions using the voice command system, hence the lack of buttons, or you can use the touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard as well.

There are also slim air vents, a small gear selector, and a “floating” armrest with a control panel comprising key switchgear like the start button and the hazard lights.

A new controversial concept is the additional 'Features on Demand' service that makes its debut on the new BMW X1, it means some features are now offered via a subscription-like Netflix, pay by the month for seat heating for example.   BMW has defended the move to charge by saying the concept aims to offer customers more comfort and flexibility, with features available to be activated at any stage of the ownership cycle.
