The Mustang was meant to mean a muscular-styled, huge and heavy V8 beast, with a traditional rear-wheel-drive layout.
Now here comes the Mach E, which picks up on the SUV trend and allows Ford to enter the rising EV segment. 4,712mm long, 1,881mm wide and 1,597mm high, which puts it somewhere between a Jaguar I-PACE and a Mercedes EQC to give you an idea of the size.
Available in 2 battery capacities (Standard or extended range - 75kWh and 98kWh respectively). The Mach-E has three power outputs and a choice of 2 or AWD.
Ford also has a performance-focused GT. It receives the larger battery, AWD, and an increase in acceleration to compete with both traditional and EV rivals.
The cheapest model has a 0–100km/h performance of 6.1 seconds, and 440km maximum driving range on a full charge. The mid-grade all-wheel drive with the extended battery pack has outputs of 258kW and 580Nm, a 0–100km/h performance of 5.7 seconds, and 540km maximum driving range on a full charge.
The top-of-the-line GT has outputs of 358kW and 813Nm, a performance of 3.8 seconds, and 500km maximum driving range on a full charge.
Standard equipment includes a huge 15.5-inch touchscreen at the centre of the dash, comfort-wise heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a smartphone charging pad, adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.
If you opt for the AWD Extended version you'll also receive a ten-speaker B&O audio system, a panoramic glass roof, a powered tailgate and an Active Park Assist function.
The Mustang Mach-E has a 402-litre boot (extendable to 1420 litres with the seats folded). As it’s really a hatchback the Mach-E’s boot is easy to load. There’s also a front storage compartment with 81 litres of space, plus a cable storage system to keep things tidy. The compartment also has a drain plug, so very useful for wet or muddy sports equipment.
The towing capacity depends on the model. Currently a max of 1000kgs. Need a towbar for your Mach-E, look no further. Fitting a towbar will allow you to carry much more or take your bikes along on your next weekend trip. Keep in mind due to the location of the fog light, it's best to remove the ball when not towing so as not to block it.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E was crash-tested by Euro NCAP and awarded a five-star rating.
In addition to crash-avoidance technology, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is equipped with seven airbags, including a twin-pillow centre airbag to act as a buffer between the two front-seat occupants.
It received an adult occupant protection rating of 92 per cent, a child occupant protection rating of 86 per cent, a vulnerable road user protection rating of 69 per cent, and a safety assist rating of 82 per cent.
Standard safety equipment includes:
7 airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, evasive steering assist, lane centring and lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, traffic sign recognition and a surround-view camera system is available as an option.
If you are searching for a mid-sized electric SUV with a bit of soul, the Mach-E is appealing, and practical, if you fit it out with a towbar.
