The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a four-door version of the 4 Series Coupe. But, don’t be mistaken thinking it’s a 3 Series saloon with a different badge – this new Gran Coupe looks completely different, far sportier than the comparatively boxy 3 Series.

Among the differences between the Coupe and the G26 ‘Gran’ model include the L-shaped-shaped trim on the doors – just like on the i4 electric car.  The G26 also has an extra black trim on the rear bumper that reaches out to meet the air vents behind the rear wheels.

The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe shares many cabin features with the 4 Series coupe. You get an almost identical dashboard with lashings of leather, glossy plastic and metal-effect trim.

You also get the same dual-screen infotainment system, so there’s a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and the same standard sat-nav and smartphone mirroring features - the Gran Coupes iDrive system also comes with Amazon Alexa built-in, so it should understand a much wider range of voice commands.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe offers similar back-seat legroom to the 3 Series - except the lower roof means less headroom of course. 

Every new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Most models come exclusively with rear-wheel drive, but you can pay extra to get an xDrive version of the 420d with four-wheel drive.  Diesel and six-cylinder petrol models come with mild-hybrid tech to help reduce fuel consumption. This uses a small electric motor to recoup energy usually lost when you brake.

Longer, wider and taller. At 4783mm in overall length, the new 4 Series Gran Coupe is 143mm longer than its predecessor, while it's 2856mm wheelbase is 46mm longer than before. 27mm wider in the body (1852mm) and 53mm taller (1442mm) than before, but the big jump in width has been in the tracks (the distance between the centre lines of the tyres).

The entry-level new 4 Series 420i is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine pushing out 135kW and 300Nm, with the 430i receiving a more powerful 190kW and 400Nm tune. Acceleration from 0-100km/h is claimed in 7.9 seconds and 6.2 seconds, respectively. The flagship M440i xDrive AWD variant uses a mild-hybrid 3.0-litre inline turbo-six that unleashes 285kW/500Nm and is capable of reaching 100km/h in 4.5sec.  The 420i receives a set of lift dampers, while the more expensive and faster 430i and M440i receive M Sport adaptive dampers and a set of upgraded brakes.  BMW says that it has achieved a near 50:50 weight distribution in the latest 4 Series Gran Coupe, as well as bringing in a lower centre of gravity than its predecessor. There’s also a bespoke suspension tune at the front and rear compared with the coupe and convertible.
