Kia has big plans to establish itself as an all-electric car company by 2040 and to become fully carbon-neutral by 2045 - here comes the first step.

The new EV6, is Kia's first dedicated electric vehicle. It’s not quite as practical overall as its sibling, the Ioniq 5, but it is more sporty and gives you tighter body control Coupled with great tech and advanced battery management, which gets you further on a single charge - you have one of the best EVs available.

The EV6 is a sporty styled crossover that sits on a new electric-car architecture, called E-GMP.  It’s available with two configurations - 321bhp four-wheel-drive form, and the more affordable single-motor, 226bhp rear-drive version.  The usable battery capacity is 77.4kWh regardless of which motor set-up you choose.

Single-motor variants are powered by a 168kW/350Nm motor on the rear axle, good for a 7.3-second 0-100km/h time, and 504km or 528km of range – with the higher figure achieved by the Air.

The all-wheel-drive GT-Line adds a second motor on the front axle, upping outputs to 239kW and 605Nm combined, slashing the 0-100km/h time to 5.2 seconds, but cutting the driving range claim to 484km. There there is the upcoming top of the range 430kW EV6 GT.

And all EV6s get an 800V electrical backbone that can deliver up to 350kW DC charging - enough to take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent of its capacity in just 18 minutes. You’ll need to allow around seven and a half hours to perform the same function on a home wall box.

There’s still 350Nm of torque on tap here, in fact, and that’s enough to take the two tonnes of EV6 up to the speed limit without any drama. There’s lots of instant EV punch, even if you’re in the efficiency-focused Eco mode, and more than enough real-world performance for rapid cross-country driving and overtakes in the car’s Normal setting.

It can be hard to judge from photos, but the Kia EV6 is a really big car.  The Kia EV6 measures 4680mm long, 1880mm wide and 1550mm high, riding on a 2900mm wheelbase – a touch bigger than its Hyundai Ioniq 5 twin, pushing the electric Kia into the 'large SUV' class.

Inside, the dashboard is dominated, on all EV6s, by a pair of 12.3-inch curved displays, each housing a crisp, clear digital instrument panel and a widescreen infotainment system that is typically slick to use, with bags of processing power. The dash itself has a useful ledge on which to balance a hand before prodding the screen, and there’s also a novel approach to a touch-sensitive panel in the lower part of the fascia. This area can flick between control of the car’s heating and ventilation and its audio systems; it’s a neat use of space for two sets of functions that don’t require constant adjustment.

The vast majority of the finishes - chrome, fabric elements and gloss-black lacquer - feel up to scratch for the price tag.

Standard features across the EV6 range include dual 12.3-inch screens, 19-inch wheels, LED headlights and tail-lights, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, parking sensors.

The rear has a flat floor, of course - so it’ll seat three adults without having to deal with a raised middle, or their knees hitting the front seatbacks. Keep in mind, that the lower roofline does impact headroom.

The boot capacity, meanwhile, is a useful 490 litres, and there’s a variable-height floor in the storage area so you can prioritise either outright space or a flat loading lip. There are securing hooks for a floor net.  
There's also a 'frunk' (front boot) that’s ideal for holding a tow ball.  On RWD models, it is large enough for an overnight bag or a couple of small grocery bags - 52-litres. AWD model has less storage space, a 20-litre set-up – barely enough for a few groceries.
 

Both EV6 variants support vehicle to load (V2L), allowing the car's battery to be used for powering electrical devices – with the GT-Line adding an exterior V2L charge port, in addition to the interior V2L socket standard in the Air.

A full suite of active safety technology is standard, including autonomous emergency braking with intersection support, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane following assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and traffic sign recognition, plus a centre airbag between the front occupants.

The Kia EV6 is a great sporty, family car if you’re looking for a large, reasonably priced electric car with a long-range between charges.
