There is certainly a buzz around the rejuvenated cult flower power vans first introduced 50 years ago.

Available in both passenger and cargo versions, the new ID Buzz looks like it will be a wild success - space is what it does best.  There a five-seater, and longer seven-seat version coming soon, at just over one metre of height from floor to ceiling, and the huge windows give it an air of roominess. There's no issue with leg or headroom inside, courtesy of the ID. Buzz's 2,989mm wheelbase.

The ID. Buzz is actually 4,712mm long (+300 on the 7 seater) and 1,985mm wide, what makes it seem even larger is its height, at 1,985mm tall - thankfully still low enough for it to fit into most car parks.  Due to the car's rear-wheel drive, the ID. Buzz's turning circle, at 11.1 metres is sufficient to manoeuvre the large van into tight spots. Not to mention the standard Park Assist Plus with self-parking function. This can manoeuvre the ID. Buzz in and out of spaces automatically, thanks to front and rear sensors, while a reversing camera is also included.

Feel like a captain perched on a ship with down armrests proving comfort on long journeys. The lack of a central tunnel to separate the front seats, the flat floor provides a vast array of space between the driver and front passenger. The very tall driving position gives an uninterrupted view of the road ahead.  

Cubbies everywhere and a removable ‘Buzz Box’ - box in the centre console that's situated between the front seats and comes with deep storage compartments. 

The ID. Buzz comes with sliding side doors which make access to the back seats really easy and the high roof means reaching into seat kids is a breeze.
 

The ID. Buzz comes with a large top-hinged tailgate at the back, which opens to reveal a wide opening with a low loading sill. The tailgate door is massive, so watch out when parking near a wall.  The boot area is square with flat sides, and there's a distance of 1,204mm between the wheel arches and a maximum of 1,330mm from the seat backs to the tailgate. Folding the back seats creates a load area that's 2,232mm long. An extending load cover is fitted as standard.  That's 1,121 litres of space behind the rear seats - on the 5-seater option.  The commercial ID. Buzz Cargo, has 3900 litres of load space behind an internal bulkhead between the B-pillars instead of the rear seats.

The ID. Buzz gets the same touchscreen infotainment system as the rest of VW's electric models.   the unit is located front and centre on the relatively simple dashboard, with nearly every function operated via the touchscreen. The user interface is logical, but there are some frustratingly unnecessary menus. A/C controls are also unfortunately touch screen only.

All models feature navigation and connected services, while an onboard SIM allows you to connect to the ID. Buzz using a smartphone app. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also included, so you can bypass VW's own software and use your own mapping.

All versions of the ID. Buzz come with a 201bhp electric motor that's mounted on the rear axle and drives the back wheels. A 77kWh battery is also standard, but that does mean the ID. Buzz has a large weight of 2,500kg. However, the weight of the battery is kept low in the chassis to help stability. The EV motor can deliver 310Nm of torque and the 0-100 km/h time is a respectable 10.2 seconds.

Volkswagen claims the standard wheelbase, single motor ID. Buzz has an energy consumption rate of 21.7-20.5kWh/100km on the WLTP cycle, which equates to a range of between 402km and 423km.

It can reach a maximum charging speed of 170kW with a fast DC rapid charger. So you can take the battery from 5-80 per cent capacity in exactly half an hour. When you’re not on a road trip, and just want to charge up at home overnight, it’ll take more than 12 hours for a standard 7.4kW home wall box to fully replenish the 77kWh battery in the ID. Buzz
