Can the facelifted Volvo XC40 Recharge tow? Maximum towing capacity.  Need a towbar for your XC40 Recharge EV?

The Volvo XC40 Recharge has gained a subtle design refresh for the first time since its launch in 2017. Interestingly, the XC40 Recharge is built at the same plant in Luqiao as the Polestar 2.

The all-electric version of the Volvo XC40 SUV has been given the XC40 facelift treatment.  A restyled front end similar to the coupe-styled C40, with sharper headlights, a frameless grille and revised intakes, plus a new wheel design and rear bumper inserts. Customers also have additional leather-free upholstery options, new alloy wheel designs, and exterior paint colours.

A Single-motor variant has been added with less power but naturally a lower price
The facelifted dual-motor gains new wheels and matrix headlights.

“As we move towards becoming a fully electric company, our design language follows,” said Robin Page, Volvo’s head of design. "With the refreshed fully electric XC40, we continue to evolve its instantly recognisable design, creating a more modern face with a sleeker front and an even more integrated grille.”

Powering the facelifted recharge single Motor model is a 170kW/330Nm electric motor on the front axle, paired with a 69kWh 'Standard Range' battery for a 7.4-second 0-100km/h time, and a 180km/h limited top speed.  With an "expected" WLTP range claim of 380km – compared with 418km for the dual-motor variant, courtesy of a larger 78kWh battery.

The dual-motor flagship employs dual 150kW electric motors for combined, all-wheel-drive outputs of 300kW and 660Nm, good for a 4.9-second 0-100km/h time. Both XC40 models offer 150kW DC fast charging.

Volvo has confirmed it will offer a minimum of 19-inch alloy wheels, Google infotainment software, LED headlights, wireless phone charging, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, and a reversing camera.

The 'Twin Motor' will add new Pixel LED headlights – Volvo's brand name for matrix headlights, which can blank out part of their beam so as not to dazzle oncoming motorists – plus a "new wheel design" (expected to measure 20 inches in diameter), and a new 'sustainable' seat upholstery material.

The XC40 Recharge comes with an integrated Android Automotive interface via a vertical touchscreen, as well as a secondary display behind the driver’s wheel.
Combined with a row of knobs and dials for entertainment and climate, as well as manual yet retro-styled air vents, the centre dash presents a totally non-confronting interface for the car’s controls.

With Google Maps fully integrated into the car and hands-free voice control enabled by Google Assistant, real-time traffic info and automatic rerouting let you reach your destination with less hassle.

You can use Google Maps in your Volvo to find charging stations along the way. This is particularly useful on longer trips and it can help you plan and enjoy a more relaxed journey. You can fast charge the XC40 Recharge Twin from 10 to 80 per cent in around 40 minutes.  The operating system includes Range Assistant, which gives you real-time energy consumption and a fairly decent range estimate. Also noteworthy is the Harman Kardon sound system.

Always up to date - With the XC40 Recharge you can receive automatic over-the-air updates and enjoy a car that keeps improving over time and is always up to date.

360° parking view is available - Reverse with confidence - Ease stress in busy traffic
With four cameras providing a 360° view, it can help you park confidently even in confined spaces.

It is rated to tow a respectable 1.5 tonnes, making it one of the most capable electric tow cars. We have an XC40 Invisible towbar now available.  Order today and enjoy the additional cargo space with a trailer, or just take your bikes along on your next weekend trip.  We also have a new range of premium bike racks now available.

Volvo is tough to beat when it comes to interior quality. Pretty much anything you touch in any XC40 feels ready to stand the test of time and the rigours of daily family use, yet is also refined and elegant.  The great mix of high-quality plastics, metal inlays and leather really gives the Volvo XC40 Recharge Electric plenty of premium feel.

This is one of those cars that feels a lot bigger inside than it looks on the outside: and a great upright seating position with the road ahead also clearly visible.

The XC40 Recharge is a pleasure to drive; it feels lightfooted and has plenty of presence and vision on the road.   Volvo has got it right in terms of dash controls and tech access and with 452 litres of cargo space in the rear as well as thoughtful additions like a pop-out rubbish bin and sliding drawers under the front seats.

Largish boot.  Split-folding rear seats are standard in the XC40. However, the seatbacks are split 60/40 rather than the more versatile 40/20/40 arrangement.  The load bay has usefully square proportions that make packing super-easy, and there’s also a large underfloor storage area.  There’s no lip to negotiate at the boot's entrance and a flap midway along the boot floor can be clipped up vertically to prevent smaller items from sliding around. There’s also an electric tailgate and handy hooks from which you can suspend shopping bags. Need more space, just add an XC40 recharge towbar.

With no petrol engine under the bonnet, the Recharge Pure Electric has an extra storage compartment you wouldn't find in the regular Volvo XC40. At 31 litres, it’s not huge, but it is handy for storing the charging cables.

As with most Volvos, safety is a priority never overlooked.  The XC40 Recharge Electric received the top five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.

Every model gets an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system that not only recognises other cars but also cyclists, pedestrians and large animals. Traffic sign recognition and Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which can intervene if you inadvertently cross the road's centre line and into the path of oncoming traffic, are also included.

You have to go for the most expensive Volvo XC40 Recharge to get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, along with adaptive cruise control and a semi-autonomous driving function that helps to steer, accelerate and brake for you in certain situations (your hands must always be on the wheel). A system to detect an imminent collision from behind and adjust braking to reduce the impact is also included on this top-spec model.

The XC40 Recharge is pure clean fun and practical when fitted with a towbar.  Order your Volvo Recharge Invisible towbar today.
