Is it a Lexus? Sure to turn heads the new Omoda 5 is firmly aimed at budget-conscious buyers.
A stylish grille, 18"two-tone alloy wheels, floating roof, dynamic fastback bodywork, T-shaped daytime running lights, and dynamic turn signals emphasize a sporty modern look.
The T-shaped daytime running lights draw attention in traffic, powerful LED headlights provide improved visibility at night, and the original design of the matrix taillights creates a 3D effect giving it a futuristic look.
Inside, the Omoda has a clean design including a high-mounted infotainment screen and places to put your phone similar to what Tesla does. There’s a single, wide panel mounted atop the dashboard that incorporates the car’s digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen.
The interior quality is pretty strong, at first glance seems to be taken from a MB or Audi. The buttons on the steering wheel feel solid and the interior touch points all feel well screwed together. There is a large amount of gloss black panelling on the centre console - probably will attract fingerprints quickly. The screens are quick and, while the graphics aren’t of the utmost resolution, the system felt reasonably logical to use
For the money, you receive technology you’ll normally only find on much higher-end vehicles. There’s an Android-based infotainment system that also boasts Apple CarPlay, along with a voice assistant that can perform vehicle functions such as opening and closing the boot and sunroof. The eight-speaker sound system is sourced from Sony, and typical Chinese extras include adjustable ambient lighting that can reflect the car’s various driving modes.
The dashboard’s pair of 10.25-inch displays – one for the infotainment, the other for the driver instruments – look crisp, and the system seems to respond snappily to inputs, they’re also standard across the range. A lot of functionality is incorporated into a tablet-style interface, but it appears simpler to use than the set-ups in some rivals. Omoda has thankfully still included physical buttons for the heating and ventilation controls.
Interesting features galore, like that the Omoda 5 automatically unlocks as you approach it with the key fob in your pocket and auto locks as you leave once parked. Led interior lights that change with the beat of the music will keep the kids entertained.
Rare in this segment, the Omoda 5 has a power tailgate, which reveals 360 litres of boot space behind the 60/40 split-fold rear seats. With the rear seats folded the capacity expands to 1075 litres. First bathes of the Omoda 5 were not rated to tow - but we do have an accessory towbar available so you can at least take your bikes along on the next weekend trip. UPDATE - newly manufactured Omoda 5s have now been rated to tow! Up to 1600kgs check your owners manual.
Powertrains are a choice of a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with front-wheel drive, and a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with all-wheel drive and an EV. The maximum power of the 1.6 Turbo engine is 197 hp, the maximum torque is 290 Nm / 2000-4000 rpm. The EV receives a revised front grille design that goes for aerodynamic efficiency at the front, the Omoda 5 electric model will feature a 61kWh battery pack and a 201bhp electric motor that drives the front wheels. Omoda says the 5 EV is capable of a 0-62mph sprint in 7.6 seconds and claims a 280-mile range.
The Omoda has received a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating and features 16 driver assistance systems including adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, auto high beam and more as standard.
A huge bang for your buck, the Omoda offers immense value and will surely put a dent in the competition's sales. If you need to add functionality why not fit our Omoda 5 Bike Carrier towbar (if your Omoda is NOT rated to tow), or if you are lucky to have an Omoda with a tow rating, we have a towbar rated for a max of 1600kgs?
