Now in its seventh generation, what is on offer in the new S-Class '7'?

The S-Class is a pioneer because it always showcases the latest Mercedes technology saloon before it filters down through the rest of the range.

The 2022 S-class lineup receives a handful of new additions. Most notably, the company's E-Active Body Control is now available. This fully active suspension system automatically adjusts damping and level control for each individual wheel to maximize ride quality and vehicle stability. Also newly available is the MBUX Interior Assist, which essentially recognizes gestures as well as hand movements towards the touchscreen or touchpad and highlights or activates the desired content. The system can also tell the difference between the driver and front-seat passenger and store individual preferences. 

It doesn’t look radically different from the outgoing model, but it is larger in every dimension compared to the old W222 -  the S450 is some 71mm longer in wheelbase (3106mm) than before while the LWB has stretched out by 51mm (3216mm).  The boot is 20L larger than the W222 - a massive 550 litres and luxurious enough to take a nap in.  Need more space or to carry your bikes along to an exclusive weekend retreat.  Why not fit a W223 towbar.  Mercedes has rated the new S-Class at a maximum of 2150kgs towing capacity.

The latest S-Class is the first Mercedes to employ the MRA2 longitudinal platform, which is rich in lightweight materials (50% aluminium), and is correspondingly stronger than before but also 60kg lighter.

With a drag co-efficiency rating as low as 0.22Cd, the W223 is one of the most aerodynamic production vehicles in history.

Mercedes offers the sedan with either a 429-hp turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine on the S500 or a 496-hp twin-turbo 4.0-litre V-8 on the S580. Both powertrains are supplemented by a 48-volt hybrid system (called EQ Boost) and pair with a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. There will also be a plug-in hybrid model, and you can opt for an EQS.

Top speed is limited to 250km/h, while the 0-100km/h sprint time takes just 5.1 seconds in both models. Impressive for a two-tonne-plus luxury limo.

Driving an S-Class was new about excitement, it's about isolation and relaxation, which is why the best seats are still in the back. 

The interior is where the S-Class always excels - first class is an understatement. You can sink into the soft lounge seats, watch the world pass by silently outside and never be aware of the road underneath or the engine ahead. Double glazing, exquisite and aromatic fabrics and materials and lush tactile surfaces work their magic inside the car, while an airtight and aero body, solid platform, air suspension and a muted yet muscular powertrain all do their thing underneath. The atmosphere is special and rarefied.

The W223 boasts a cutting-edge infotainment system.  The second generation of the MBUX infotainment system offers users gesture control and runs through a 12.8-inch OLED display. There’s also active ambient lighting and augmented reality head-up display, and seats that massage the passengers and keep them at precisely the right temperature. But it’s probably the mind-blowing 3D effect of the instrument cluster that will delight first-time users. Rear-seat passengers enjoy the full gamut of relaxed, luxury motoring in the rear of the S-Class.

Inside, the new S-class you'll find a lot of screens, in fact up to five, including a giant centre touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The latter works in concert with other technology to create a three-dimensional effect, but—thankfully—it can be turned off if you'd prefer the screens have a conventional appearance. There's also an enhanced head-up display that will show navigation directions in augmented reality. Basically, arrows move and turn in real-time to supposedly better assist the driver. 

The build quality and cabin materials live up to Mercedes' upscale standards, and the W223 provides limousine-like accommodations for all passengers, specifically those riding in the back. The new model's rear-seat area offers slightly increased headroom and legroom, and it can also be equipped with power-adjustable reclining seats that have massage functions and extensive heating elements. Along with being physically coddled, those in the back should be mentally entertained by the optional rear-seat entertainment system that adds two 11.6-inch screens on the front seatbacks as well as the interactive LED interior lighting.

Every S-class comes with an array of standard driver-assistance technology, including the ability to park itself and even take preventative measures to protect passengers when it detects an imminent collision. Speed Adaptation (adhering to the posted speed limits), Evasive Steering Assist (a sophisticated form of crash mitigation), adaptive cruise control with active stop/go, Active Lane Change Assist that automatically moves the car into the lane you indicate to), Mercedes' PreSafe crash-preparation tech that primes all the safety systems for impact, electronic stability program that encapsulates all the active driver-assist tech, Active Emergency Stop Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking front and rear (including for cyclists and pedestrians), Traffic Sign Assist, Parking Package with Active Parking Assist and 360-degree camera and tyre pressure monitors. The new S-Class also features innovations that include, rear-seat airbags and an active suspension that will lift the car up to reduce the severity of damage during a collision.
