Could Citroen’s new C4 topple the Golf? It’s practical enough, great specs for the money and very comfortable, most importantly - just that bit different from the norm. Can the new Citroen C4.  C4 towing capacity.

Citroen has listened to the popularity of SUVs and injected crossover genes into its new hatch.

A raised body means it's easier to get in and out and allows for long-travel suspension and thin big-diameter tyres – great for comfort. The roof's lower than a typical crossover, and the tail slopes away, easing the air resistance.  Bit like a top range Coupe.

Citroën makes some bold claims about comfort in the C4, and the good news is there’s substance to go with them.

The suspension fitted to the C4 is properly soft, allowing it to glide over minor imperfections in the road surface and cushion you from most potholes.  The downside of the Citroën C4’s set-up is that it can get quite bouncy over undulating country roads.

A suite of active safety systems are available, including adaptive cruise control and lane-following assist, which combine for semi-autonomous driving on motorways, allowing the car to accelerate, brake and centre itself within its lane.

They're joined by autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera.

Interior- this is one of Citroën’s best interiors yet, mixing good build quality with a pleasing palette of materials.  Two adults will fit in the back of the C4 and have plenty of room for their feet beneath the front seats. 

All Citroën C4s have a 10-inch touchscreen mounted high up in the middle of the dashboard.  You also get a long list of infotainment features with the C4, including Bluetooth and voice control, while the presence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto means you can access your phone’s apps via the car’s screen.

The boot capacity, meanwhile, is 380 litres - and there’s an adjustable boot floor that allows you to prioritise a flat load bay or outright spaces.  Need to tow a load or carry your bikes on a weekend away.  Why not fit a C4 towbar.  Citroen has rated the new C4 at a max of 1325 kgs.

Citroen's hatch isn't like all the rest and plays big on comfort.  While there are a lot of coupé SUVs these days, the vast majority wear premium badges that bring premium price tags. The Citroën C4, however, makes the same blend of swoopy looks and elevated seating much more affordable.
