BMW has widened the tracks by up to 63mm at the front and 35mm at the back. Interestingly, the new 2 Series sits significantly lower than before at just 1,390mm tall, down by 28mm.

That extra size is good for cabin space, though the 2 Series retains the same four-seat layout as before. The really good news is that the new G42 2 Series retains its rear-drive layout and the option of a six-cylinder engine.  The 2 Series Coupe shares most of its mechanicals with the 3 Series, and there’s no getting away from some of the similarities, but it’s not just a pure clone. BMW expects around two-thirds of 2 Series Coupé buyers to go for the entry-level 220i, which has a 181bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine under the bonnet. Acceleration is strong enough (0-100 takes 7.5 seconds)

There’s a more powerful 241bhp version of the same basic engine (badged 230i). The range-topping M240i has a 369bhp 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine providing the firepower along with four-wheel drive, acceleration is explosive - from a standstill, you’ll be doing 0-100 in just 4.3 seconds.
A highlight is the eight-speed automatic gearbox that all versions of the 2 Series come with as standard. It’s smooth when left in automatic mode, yet reacts quickly when you use the paddles behind the steering wheel.

Inside the 2 Series is in keeping with the current BMW family. There’s a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display to replace the old 2 Series’ analogue dials and a 10.25-inch touchscreen in the centre.  BMW’s iDrive 7.0 is one of the best infotainment systems in the business. The central 12.3-inch screen is crystal clear and can be controlled using Hey BMW voice prompts, touch inputs, and a rotary controller.  You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which means you can bypass the native navigation and use Apple or Google maps, or more easily access podcasts on the move.

The new 2 Series will make a significant leap in safety with adaptive cruise control, lane trace assist, head-up display, 360-degree monitor and rear cross-traffic alert all available. 

Want people to know you are young at heart? The 2 Series Coupé is a great all-rounder with the driving manners you’d expect from a sporty BMW.
