The HS PHEV is truly well equipped right out of the box. It sports 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.1-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, built-in navigation, a 12.3-inch digital dash, leather-look seat trim, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, with a four-way manually adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, full LED front lighting, dual-zone climate control, cooled centre armrest box, an auto-dimming rear vision mirror, as well as keyless entry with push-start ignition.

MG might be known as being more of a budget brand, but the HS’s cabin really helps to shrug off those views. It genuinely feels upmarket, with plush materials used alongside a very generous equipment list.  If you don’t look too closely at all the materials, then, the MG HS is a very nice looking SUV, and its success proves the look is right on the money for what mid-size SUV buyers are searching for.

The rear seats are impressive in terms of the amount of room available.  Rear passengers also get a large bottle holder in the doors, dual USB ports, dual adjustable air vents, hard pockets on the backs of the front seats, and a surprisingly elaborate drop-down armrest with a flip-open storage tray and large dual bottle holders. 

The MG HS PHEV comes with innovative features including the marque’s MG Pilot Driver Safety Technology system, and a comprehensive suite of active and passive driver assistance technologies included as standard. This includes auto emergency braking (detects pedestrians and cyclists up to 64km/h, detects vehicles up to 150km/h), lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, auto high beams, traffic-sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control.

Six airbags are standard, and the HS has all the expected brake, stability, and traction controls. 

Boot space comes in at 451 litres, but thanks to 60/40 split-folding rear seats it increases to 1275 litres maximum boot space. It is fitted with a 16.6kWh battery pack that will deliver a claimed range 63  kilometres in EV mode - ideal for the daily commute – and can reduce emissions by up to 70%. The MG HS PHEV’s total output from the electric motor with the 1.5L turbo combustion engine is 189kW of power and 370Nm of torque, delivering 1.7L/100km combined cycle fuel consumption and 39g/km CO2 emissions.
Using Intelligent Hybrid Energy Management, the vehicle intuitively identifies and adapts power output depending on the road conditions, whilst actively learning the operator’s individual driving style to adjust power and rationalise the battery ratio accordingly.

The PHEV has a 190km/h top speed that gets from zero to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds.
