As always, you can rely on the French to build a stylish small hatchback.

It must be emphasised this is a completely different car from the original 208.  This is its second generation, which gets an extensive redesign inside and out, as well as offering diesel, petrol and pure-electric versions – the first small car to do so.

Test drive to see if the interior design suits you.  The dash is designed in a way that you’re supposed to view the iCockpit digital instruments (the speedo, rev counter etc.) by looking over, rather than through, the steering wheel – something Peugeot has tried to make easier by shrinking the steering wheel to the size of a go-carts.

The better news is that the seats are comfortable, and adjustable lumbar support is available

Entry-level Active models get a 7.0in touchscreen with shortcut buttons on both sides of the screen. A bigger, 10.0in touchscreen with sat nav is available as an option.

The 208’s interior is one of the most strikingly designed in the small car class – even including premium models. The use of high-end materials and soft-touch surfaces definitely make it feel upmarket.

You must remember it is a small car, but even tall drivers will find they have enough space in the front of the 208.  The rear is difficult to get into, but once inside, the 208 has a good amount of room for two adults with enough head and legroom for taller people.

The 208’s boot is a decent size for the class. If you need to take more along, while not fit a Peugeot 208 towbar?  A towbar will allow you to take those bikes along on a weekend trip as well.  Check your tow rating - looks like the e208 has not been certified to tow.

Traffic sign recognition is also standard on all versions, as is lane-keeping assistance.
