It's not a Volvo - it’s a Polestar. The new brand is a spin-off from the Swedish company which aims to be a little bit sleeker and sportier than the marque that has a reputation for boxy estates and sensible, safe saloons.

A whole new sportier brand, on paper at least the Polestar 2 has the hardware to back it up. It’s an all-electric car with up to 402bhp - more than a Porsche 911.

The Polestar has the potential to challenge Tesla on affordability.  It’s designed in Sweden. With its minimalist look, the interior has a very Scandinavian feel that beats the Tesla for design class and material quality. 

The 2's interior brings together wood, fabric, and plastic in a simple yet artful way. It looks modern, with clean lines, a spartan colour palette, and minimal switchgear.

The star of the show is that iPad-like screen that sits within the dash. It controls everything from the stereo to the heating and the navigation. Clean graphics and it is snappy in its operation, and its menu layout is easy to come to grips with. What's really great about this whole thing is that it makes Google Maps the integrated nav system and provides useful EV-specific information to the driver, such as where the nearby charging stations are and how long you'll have to sit there once you arrive.

Polestar swaths the interior in eco-friendly vegan fabric (though, you can get leather, if you really want it). 

Volvo knows a thing or two about great seats and Polestar has borrowed a wonderfully supportive set for the front row. Space is generous and not an issue up front; even tall drivers will have plenty of room, and there’s decent storage, including a couple of cupholders, a central cubby under the armrest, and slim door bins.

There’s a generous amount of legroom in the rear, too

The Polestar 2’s rear seats fold in a 60/40 configuration and are dropped manually via pulleys in the seatbacks. It has a hatchback-style boot opening, as opposed to the Model 3’s saloon aperture, so loading long and bulky items should be easier in the Polestar 2.  Under the rear boot floor, there's some underfloor storage that's sufficient for charging cables, and there's another small boot under the bonnet upfront.

The 2022 Polestar 2 is available with either one or two electric motors. The car with the single-motor setup is front-wheel drive and has an estimated driving range of 540km. The dual-motor 2 has a shorter range,480km, but that's offset by all-wheel drive and significantly more power for quicker acceleration.

With its smaller 64kWh battery pack, the least costly Polestar 2 has a 440km driving range

When you finally do need to plug it in, it’ll take a 150kW DC rapid, allowing an 80% capacity charge in about 40 minutes. At home, an 11kW AC connection is the maximum it can accept.

City driving is definitely relaxing, aided by the inclusion of a one-pedal driving mode. This means that the Polestar 2’s regenerative brakes, which feed energy back into the battery whenever you lift off the accelerator, slow the car to such an extent that you don’t often need to touch the brake pedal at all, except for an emergency stop.  You can of course switch this mode off if you prefer and use the brakes as normal.

The Polestar is a stylish, competitively priced Scandinavian saloon car with an upmarket interior and performance that can embarrass most sports cars. And given that it’s significantly cheaper than many other electric cars with those qualities it is worth a test drive.  The best part is it can tow.
