The third-generation hatch is lighter and more spacious to its predecessor, but can the new F40 BMW 1 -Series tow?

 

The third-generation BMW 1 Series has switched to the UKL front and all-wheel-drive platform. Bye bye RWD. For the first time BMW's smallest hatch is based on a front-wheel-drive platform with only a five-door body on offer.

 

Visually, the new 1 Series is quite a departure from earlier models with a wedge-shaped body and slim side windows.

 

The car features a short, steeply raked bonnet behind angular headlight units, and merged oversized kidney grilles inspired by the X5 and X7.

 

The new F40 generation has skipped ahead of the F20 in leaps and bounds. The ambience and quality of materials is markedly better than the model it replaces. BMW’s new design language fits the 1 Series well. The unusual six-colour lighting package livens the mood at night.

 

BMW has loaded the 1-Series with standard tech to justify the price hike. BMW’s seventh-generation operating system features (with iDrive), while the intelligent personal assistant can, essentially, take orders and carry out commands. Simply say “Hey BMW” and you’re away. Two 10.25-inch colour displays control both the infotainment (touchscreen) and instrument cluster.

 

The new 1 Series hatch is 4319mm long, 1799mm wide, 1434mm tall, and has a 2670mm wheelbase. This means the new model is 5mm shorter, 34mm wider, 13mm taller, and sits on a 20mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor.

 

On top of more passenger space, the boot has grown 20 litres to 380L, with 1200L available when the rear seats are folded down. 

 

So no RWD, but the 1 Series now feels truly premium inside, it’s roomier and more practical.
