Mazda finally plugs the gap between the CX-3 and CX-5. Do you need a towbar for your CX-30? How much can the new CX-30 actually tow?

Mazda's CX-30 is aimed at young families. While designers developed the car with the aim of creating “the world’s most beautiful crossover” - you be the judge.

At 4395mm long and 1540mm tall, the CX-30 is around 7cm shorter and 10cm taller than the hatchback 3 on which it’s based. Shorter because Mazda thinks this makes it easier to manoeuvre around town, which is where all of these new cross over's are expected to reside.

The dashboard is as simple as they come, with easy-to-use climate controls separated from the infotainment screen, which can only be operated with a clickwheel on the centre-tunnel (note – Mazda says there’s as much space between the front seats as there is in the bigger CX-5).

What we like is the standard head-up display (HUD) that projects your speed, the speed limit, and navigation directions onto the windscreen, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road for longer - unless you’re wearing polarised sunglasses, as with a mobile phone screen.

The boot isn’t the largest at 317 litres - need more space?  Why not fit a CX-30 towbar to take more stuff on a weekend away, or take the bikes along an a Sunday trip.

As standard, the CX-30 also gets safety features including seven airbags, blind-spot monitoring, driver-attention alert, front and rear autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and radar-guided active cruise control with stop-and-go. It also achieved one of the highest ANCAP crash scores to date, achieving 99 per cent in adult occupant protection testing.

Depending on your specs the new Maxda CX-30 is rated from 1200-1550 kgs.

Given market demand, there's always room for more crossovers in any brand’s portfolio, and it's hard to see this trend reversing.
Verdict, good reliable city car.  The Mazda CX-30 handles well, looks smart and has a lovely interior. Could do with more luggage space, but nothing a towbar cannot fix.  Full range of Mazda CX-30 towbars now available, to solve your CX-30 towing requirements.
