Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the next-generation C-Class which it has packed full of new features that will make it a more luxurious, efficient and safer car to drive every day. The new W206 generation, C-Class finally replaces the current generation which has been around since 2014.

The new MB C-Class is built on a revised version of the outgoing car’s underpinnings, but is physically bigger in every respect, except for height.  Mercedes-Benz has stretched the dimensions of the C-Class, with the sedan gaining 65mm in length and 13mm in width, while the estate has gained 49mm in length and 13mm in width making it closer to a large sedan than ever before.

The new C-Class borrows much of its tech from the S-Class, including the basic layout and concept of its interior. The engines are all mild-hybrid four-cylinders, but plug-ins are just around the corner.

The new C-Class does not disappoint on comfort. The seats and driving position are right on the mark and it’s very quiet - very little wind or tyre noise.

It's easy to find a comfortable driving position in the Mercedes C-Class because all models have plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel. Lumbar adjustment is standard to make long-distance driving less taxing on your back. AMG line Premium models add full electric adjustment with memory settings.

The cabin looks as though it was lifted straight from the new S-Class.   A large 12.3-inch digital instrument panel sits just behind the steering wheel. And a 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen dominates the centre console - at first glance, it appears complicated and tricky to use. But it’s actually quite intuitive to operate.  When driving, the voice assistant works well and gets cleverer with every generation. Voice control is included on all trim levels and is surprisingly good at recognising your requests, which can include everything from changing the interior temperature to programming a location into the nav.

Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration is provided as standard, and there’s wireless phone charging and two C-USB sockets in the centre console to charge up your devices. Music lovers will be impressed with the 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system, on the AMG line.

Relative to its competitors, the C-Class Saloon is short on space in the back and boot. It’s better and physically bigger in every respect than the old C-Class, but leg and headroom for those sitting in the rear seats is average and at 455 litres the boot is, well smallish.  The redeeming feature is that the C-Class’s rear seat has a useful 40/20/40 split-and-fold configuration as standard. If electric front seats are fitted to the C-Class, they automatically move out of the way when you fold the second row and return to their original position when you put the rear seats back up again - very clever.

Safety and security are taken care of.  All versions have automatic emergency braking (AEB) to stop you from going into the back for the car in front. You also get tyre pressure monitoring, multiple airbags (including one between the front seats) and blind-spot monitoring, which is either an option or reserved for the top trim levels of many rivals.  An alarm and engine immobiliser are fitted as standard too.
