More upmarket Isuzu D-MAX now positioned mid-market.  Can the New D-Max tow? Towing capacity? Need a towbar?

Just being a tough truck is no longer enough. Many people are picking them instead of SUVs – partly because of tax breaks – it now also needs to be comfy, be able to impress the neighbours and be extra safe, too.

Isuzu executives admit "we are going upmarket, and we do expect to sell a high degree of premium models...We’re not about making our vehicles too expensive, we want to be seen as good value for money."
You decide how you feel about the new D-Max.

The D-Max remains very strong off-road compared to its rivals. Selectable four-wheel drive and low-range gears are standard, and Isuzu has shortened the time it takes for these systems to engage on the new truck. A mechanical rear diff lock is also fitted to higher-spec variants, while hill descent control and hill start assist also feature, and we can confirm that the D-Max feels largely unstoppable in the rough.

Another highlight is the suite of safety systems. It comes with forward collision warning and auto emergency braking, traffic-sign recognition and a speed limiter, which contributed to the pick-up’s five-star Euro NCAP rating. On top of that, auto models come with adaptive cruise and lane assist.

Fortunately, the ride in the new D-Max is much more sophisticated than pick-ups of years gone by and far better than the previous generation model.

Climb up to the driver's seat in the new Isuzu D-Max and you’ll find a well laid out interior along with a decent driving position that includes lumbar support on the driver’s seats of all models.  Visibility is pretty good thanks to a decent forward view, sizeable door mirrors and relatively slim side pillars.

The Isuzu D-Max is a substantial vehicle and, as you’d expect, there’s enough head, leg and shoulder room for even the largest tradie with oversized tool belts to get comfortable in.

The all-new Isuzu D-MAX models bring a redesigned version of the brand’s trademark 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel with more competitive 140kW/450Nm outputs.

Although average fuel consumption increases from 7.9 to 8.0L/100km due to extra weight, the D-MAX matches the class leaders with a 3500kg towing capacity.

The new D-Max is definitely a step forward when compared with the previous model. It’s better equipped, nicer to look at, is a more capable work vehicle and is also the safest truck in its class.
