Not many quality estates are left in production, due to the popularity of SUVs, but it is an achievement that the Volvo V90 Cross Country still manages to carve out a niche for itself.  Unpretentious, practical and classic.

The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a more rugged version of the Swedish company’s wagon/estate - it receives a raised ride height and four-wheel drive to help it cope with rough roads and slippery conditions.

The V90 Cross Country is distinguished by its charcoal plastic cladding for the wheel arches, side mouldings, and bumpers – and its glossy chrome-black grille. Each door gets silver skid plates, and there are unique leather seats and black walnut trim pieces.

Although it’ll never be mistaken for an out-and-out off-roader, the 65mm increase in ride height, four-wheel drive and underbody-protecting skid plates mean it can cope with seriously rough roads. And the Off-Road Drive Mode makes doing so easy – it calibrates the engine and gearbox for ultimate traction, makes the steering light and automatically engages the hill-descent control, so you can safely glide down steep inclines.  The raised suspension and the larger-than-standard door mirrors mean that visibility is superb.

Based on Momentum trim, Cross Country models come as standard with a nine-inch portrait display for the infotainment screen, heated front seats, two-zone climate control and a power-operated tailgate.

The Cross Country will take four adults in complete comfort and the boot is decent.

The facelifted V90 Cross Country comes with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a vertically oriented 9.0-inch centre touchscreen. The large display features quality graphics and operates very much like an Apple iPad – allowing you to scroll through submenus at the flick of a finger and pinch to zoom in on maps.  The newest facelift includes features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Navigation, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and in-car Wi-Fi. The new Google-based infotainment interface looks nice and is more responsive than the Sensus Connect system (2017-2021) from previous model years.

Volvo has earned a reputation for producing some of the safest cars on the market. It's a reputation the company clearly intends on maintaining, as illustrated by the abundance of standard driver-assistance features on the V90 Cross Country.  The car is strong enough to withstand a large collision, but the Swedish brand has put a lot of focus on avoiding a crash in the first place through its advanced safety systems. As well as the usual active braking with pedestrian detection and lane departure assist, there’s now Large Animal Detection (which can spot deer emerging from the side of the road and take avoiding action) and semi-autonomous Pilot Assist which can keep the car stay in lane and a safe distance from the car in front.  The V90 also gets Volvo’s Run-off Road protection system that debuted on the XC90. Sensors can detect when the car has left the road without control from the driver, and pre-tense the seatbelts to lock occupants in place. The energy-absorbing seats also claim to reduce the chance of a spinal injury by a third.
Unquestionably, Volvo receives a full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
