The fourth-generation Audi A6 Allroad builds on its own success. Audi, with its Allroad, invented the higher-ride premium wagon niche in 1999 and keeps perfecting it over the years. It is still a spacious, luxurious, comfortable wagon, go-anywhere four-wheel drive, with excellent ground clearance. You’ll instantly notice the A6 Allroad feels like its development has been worked on over a long period. Every aspect of it, from its almost impossibly wide-reaching suspension travel to the gear selector’s precise movement, feels honed, considered and superbly calibrated.
Audi tried to make the fourth generation version of this A6 Allroad model look more striking. You immediately notice the raised ride height - and the unique body attachments that emphasise its rugged capabilities. Aluminium-look underbody cladding provides additional protection, plus there are wheel arch trims finished in contrasting 'scandium grey' and allroad-specific roof rails to emphasise this car's leisure-orientated remit.
There are a few minor updates for 2022, including a new available Black optic package, which adds blacked-out exterior accents, roof rails, and contrast paint.
A smooth turbocharged V-6 provides ample power and the A6 Allroad's ride is plush on all but the most rugged roads. The extra space behind the rear seat afforded by the wagon body style should attract would-be SUV buyers looking for something a little different.
The 565 litre boot expands to 1,680 litres with the rear seats folded down. As well as hooks and loops to tie down cargo, you get a luggage net and securing rails as standard. The A6 Allroad adjustable air suspension is capable of raising or lowering the Allroad in a multitude of modes. It ensures a smooth ride and even greater control when venturing off-road thanks to a mode that lifts the car up an additional 45mm. All versions include standard adaptive dampers, which gives it an impressive spread of variability, easily finding a good balance between comfort and control.
The A6 Allroad's interior is very refined. It’s all screens, and sharp creases and you can see the German precision and comparable to the standard A6. Which means it's sleek, modern and well-crafted from high-quality materials. The majority of the car's secondary controls, including climate control and driving modes, are adjusted via a touchscreen on the centre console. This dual-screen setup works well and provides haptic feedback.
In addition to the digital screen for controlling cabin climate, the A6 Allroad features a central display that sprouts from the dashboard. This one features Audi's infotainment software, which can be customized to suit the needs of the driver. An 8.8-inch screen with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and onboard Wi-Fi comes standard. Audi's Virtual Cockpit gauge cluster and a larger 10.1-inch infotainment screen are options. Audi provides a 10-speaker audio system, but buyers can upgrade to a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D premium sound system if desired.
Thanks to this car's long 2.93-metre wheelbase, space in the back is very generous, so there’s room for three adults to get really comfortable.
