Solved: BMW iX towbar wiring issues. The iX is one of the best electric cars available. Can the iX tow? Towing capacity? Need a BMW iX Towbar?

The BMW iX utilisies a totally new digital wiring system and has meant without the factory fitted tow pack/control unit, towing with a trailer has been impossible.   The great news is we finally have a dedicated IX wiring kit and module that allows all the lights to be passed onto your trailer.  A 13 Pin iX wiring kit and 13 to 7 pin adaptor is now included with all our towbars.   BMW iX ownwers can now fully take advantage of the iXs towing capacity.

BMW has developed a large, all-electric SUV that is comfortable, great to drive and leads the pack with technology.  It is unquestionably the most radical and technologically advanced BMW to date.

The iX exterior design is another huge leap for BMW, with the bespoke all-electric SUV featuring lots of angular lines and bluff panels. Not to mention the elongated grille that has proven controversial. The overall look will probably divide opinion, but the iX definitely stands out against the more traditionally-styled Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQC. For the first time on a BMW SUV, the doors are frameless affairs. They do away with conventional door handles for an electronic mechanism.

BMW-IX-towbar-fitted-etowbarsThe iX is large.  At 4953mm in length, 1967mm in width and 1695mm in height, BMW’s third electric production model is 15mm longer, 37mm narrower and 53mm lower than the X5. It also has a wheelbase that is 28mm longer.

The iX is being similarly marketed to the X5, as a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) to highlight both its dynamic and lifestyle qualities.
As expected, a luxury level of ride and refinement and superb interior quality - you get what you pay for.

It’s not just the driver who’ll enjoy travelling in the iX, passengers also benefit from the superior levels of comfort and on-board tech, not to mention the whisper-quiet electric powertrain and luxury cabin feel: the interior is swathed in soft-touch fabrics, while the futuristic dash design is a standout feature.
Passengers in the iX will benefit from the EV’s excellent interior space, with plenty of knee room in the front and rear of the cabin. Being a bespoke all-electric car, the iX doesn’t have to accommodate a bulky transmission tunnel, which means the floor is completely flat and particularly benefits those in the rear seats.

Power comes from a 71kWh battery in the ‘entry-level’ iX xDrive 40 or a huge 105kWh one in the range-topping xDrive50. Both versions have four-wheel drive, with an electric motor on each axle. In terms of raw power the entry xDrive40iX model offers 322bhp, the xDrive50 516bhp and the M60 provides progressively more punch at 610bhp.
The regenerative braking (which recovers energy to top up the battery as you slow down) is also mightily impressive. It can be set to an automatic mode, or you can choose high, medium or low settings.

The larger 105.2kWh (net) lithium-ion battery is mounted underneath the floor and within the centre tunnel, providing the new BMW with a low centre of gravity in comparison to its relatively tall stature. The 303Ah unit is claimed to provide the iX xDrive50 with a range of between 549 and 630km.  You can probably realistically bank on a good 500km and more between visits to the charging pile in regular driving. The smaller 71kWh battery has a range of between 372 and 425km.

bmw-ix-towbars-wiring-BMW-IX-towbar-fitted-etowbarsInside, the iX is pure quality, with an ultra-modern feel and lots of soft-touch, suede-like materials in use across the dash and door cards. Two 14.5-inch curved screens take centre stage, while the standard Live Cockpit Professional media setup features a head-up display function and BMW’s latest iDrive system.

Other carmakers are moving exclusively to touchscreen inputs, BMW has chosen to keep the iDrive click wheel input for its eighth-generation infotainment system. That’s a very good thing – it was, and still is, much easier to make adjustments on the move with these physical controls.

The displays themselves look spectacular. Two vast screens sit side-by-side within a gently curved pane that appears to float above the dash. The graphics are bright and stylish, loading times are incredibly quick, and the full-screen integration of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is flawless.

The cabin is more than comfortable, comes standard with: four-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and USB ports located in the front and rear. BMW’s Parking Assistant function is also included for all models, with the system being able to identify a suitable parking space and then take control to park your car automatically - a real boon for those not keen on parallel parking or navigating tight public car parks.

The iX’s boot is smaller compared to rivals, disappointing at 500 litres - need extra space? Why not fit an iX towbar? It will also allow you to take your bikes along on the next weekend away.

The maximum braked trailer towing capacity for the xDrive40 model is 2,100kg, although if you need to hitch up a bigger caravan, you may find that the xDrive50 version is the better option as it’s rated to tow up to 2,500kg. Sport up to 2600kgs

The iX comes equipped with the most extensive set of driver assistance systems yet seen on a BMW model, including front collision warning, steering and lane control assistance, active cruise control with stop-and-go, and exit-warning remote.

The BMW iX is punchy, clever and beautifully finished, the iX deserves a closer look if you need a luxurious, spacious, quick and extremely quiet EV.  Need a BMW iX towbar? We have you covered, including a dedicated wiring kit and module.  Or your BMW iX towbar today.
