This is only the second time BMW has created an M-exclusive car, last time was in 1978. The XM is the most expensive car in the X-Range SUV line-up and is not for everyone.

Size-wise, the XM sits between the X5 and X7. At the front, ultra-slim headlights sit above an enormous take on the double-kidney grille. Not a single panel along the flanks goes uncreased, and at the rear, there’s further complex surfacing and a pair of twin vertically stacked exhaust tips. The shutlines are tight and the creases in the body panels are extremely crisp. However, the bevelled-block proportions are very aggressive; some might say thuggish.

Inside, the XM is exceptionally finished. There’s also an enormous, contoured roof panel that changes colour with the driving mode. There’s no doubt that the rear ‘M lounge’ cabin is impressive, with plush seats and acres of legroom and headroom. The central 14.9-inch touchscreen runs the latest BMW OS 8.5 operating system, and the 12.3-inch driver display offers a variety of information screens that can be adjusted from a steering-wheel-mounted toggle. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported through wireless connection. As is sadly becoming the norm, the climate-control functions are accessed via the touchscreen, which can be frustrating to use while driving. There’s also a head-up display, integrated gesture control, voice activation, and the ability to have two telephones simultaneously connected. You also score the party-trick Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system that includes 20 speakers, 1475-watt output and even light-up tweeters in the doors.

The XM's acceleration is explosive, and its braking is quite good—as long as you remember how heavy the vehicle is and take it into account. Its kerb weight of 2.7 tonnes and can hit 100km/h from rest in 4.3 seconds. The idea of a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid may seem not too environmentally friendly. You must remember that the XM’s 25.7kWh battery pack is good for an approximate 82km electric-only range, meaning that your regular commute can be easily managed without the big V8 even starting up. When the engine does start, the 650Nm torque band from the V8 is yours from 1600rpm all the way to 5000rpm, right about where the peak 360kW power output hits (5400rpm). Throw in the electric motor and these climb to 480kW and 800Nm. You can select from Electric, Hybrid or an automatic eControl drive mode, prioritising your needs through the car’s driveline.
