Designers had to ensure the new 2023 GLC was a natural evolution - a risk-free makeover of the existing model. But when you look closely the new GLC is actually a lot different, longer overall with more interior room and luggage space, an even more premium look and feel inside and out, and boasting higher standard equipment levels.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC has a redesigned façade with new LED headlamps, 18- or 20-inch alloy wheel designs, and updated three-dimensional taillights. 

The new GLC is built on the MRA2 vehicle architecture that underpins the C-Class, and S-Class sedans. Size wise the 2nd generation GLC has grown -overall length has increased by 60mm. The wheelbase is 15mm longer, now 2888mm, which improves rear-seat legroom, the front overhang has increased as well as most importantly the overhang behind the rear axle to address the need of GLC owners to carry more stuff - thanks to the redesign the rear now see an increase of 9% in load space. The design is much cleaner, the new Mercedes-Benz GLC now looks even more upmarket. It's also more aerodynamic, with a drag coefficient of 0.29, compared with the preceding model's 0.31, which, combined with powertrain improvements, will deliver better fuel efficiency and well as a quieter ride.

Inside, the new GLC is a radical departure from the previous X253 - which has been around for nearly a decade.  The avant-garde interior is what we have come to expect from Mercedes. The wing-like profile on the upper part of the dashboard blends amicably with the curved centre console. The redesigned air vents are “reminiscent of the engine nacelles of an aircraft"

The cabin has been overhauled in line with the C-Class, with a portrait-orientated 11.9-inch MBUX infotainment system and a freestanding digital instrument cluster. The large screen is slightly angled towards the driver and is powered by the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), and the infotainment system provides access to a lot of vehicle functions such as multimedia, navigation (with augmented reality and live traffic information), climate controls as well as support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.  You’ll still have quick access to certain functions via the row of buttons just below the touchscreen, including a fingerprint scanner so you can log into MBUX quickly with your profile preferences.

Also, the interior includes a new steering wheel, digital infotainment and HVAC controls, heated front seats with memory settings, ambient lighting, a power sunroof, and a power-operated liftgate. In addition, the new GLC has a “transparent hood” feature that displays a virtual view of the front underside on the centre display, helping drivers see obstacles while off-roading. The system uses a 360-degree camera and offers two views: under or ahead of the vehicle.

Its quiet inside and Mercedes-Benz highlights the new GLC’s acoustically optimized body and advanced sound insulation. Underneath its svelte body is an upper structure filled with acoustic foam and hot-formed steel to eliminate noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). The windshield has an acoustic membrane, while the driver’s door features laminated glass.

The base 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. It produces 190kW and 400Nm – up 30Nm over the previous GLC 300.

Power is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed torque-converter automatic. A 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.2 seconds is claimed.

Mercedes-Benz claims the 48-volt mild-hybrid system saves fuel, with an estimated combined fuel consumption of 7.7L/100km – down from 8.2L/100km. It supports ‘gliding’, ‘boost’ and ‘recuperation’ functions, and can provide a 17kW and 200Nm boost.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC is covered by a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.  It scored 92 per cent for adult occupant protection, 90 per cent for child occupant protection, 74 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 84 per cent for safety assistance.

The new GLC features a new front-centre airbag as well as Autonomous emergency braking, Rear cross-traffic alert, Lane-keep assist, Traffic sign recognition, Lane departure warning, Driver attention monitoring, Blind-spot alert and Adaptive cruise control.
