Getting the N treatment was inevitable for the Kona, and by doing so capitalises on a niche – a moderately-priced, performance focussed crossover SUV.

The audacious but functional body kit additions like the roof spoiler, rear diffuser, and front brake-cooling air vents are a clear indication that speed and handling are paramount, for the new Hyundai N Kona. Other tweaks like the colour coded guards, blacked out front badge, side skirts and front lip further separate the N car from the base Kona, giving the car a more meaningful stance.

Accommodated by the wheels are big red N callipers which, along with the massive dual exhaust tips, suggest the N can justify the lively looks. Though a bigger justification is the turbocharged heart. Getting the same 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine from the i30 N means the Kona N also benefits from the stronger block and bigger turbo for 2022 models. A solid 206kW and 392Nm is produced as standard. It accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km/h. The 2.0T flat power engine produces maximum output at 5,500 rpm and maintains a constant maximum torque from 2,000 rpm to the late 4,000 rpm. If you use NGS (N Grin Shift), it increases output by temporarily increasing turbo pressure, the output can be increased to a maximum of 290 horsepower, allowing you to enjoy even more powerful acceleration.

For the 2022 Kona N model, Hyundai offers a level of customization referred to as N Grin Control. The system features five drive modes: Eco, Normal, Sport, N and Custom. These modes adjust the engine, stability control, exhaust note and steering to provide an appropriate level of performance depending on driver's wishes. Just like in a video, do not forget to press the red N Grin Shift button on the steering wheel which immediately adds 10 horsepower for 20 seconds.

The driving position in the Hyundai Kona N is surprisingly low for an SUV, but that’s good for the sporty feel of the car.  The heated and ventilated front bucket seats are comfortable on long journeys and offer a good amount of side support for more spirited driving. They're covered in leather and suede, and the settings are electronically adjustable (including lumbar support).

The Kona N's 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system is mounted high up on the dashboard, making it easy to see and reach. It’s responsive, the graphics are crisp and the menus are easy to navigate.

The system includes built-in sat-nav and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone mirroring (so you can use your phone apps on the touchscreen). You also get wireless phone charging and a head-up display. 

The rear seats are equally comfortable as the front. Legroom is only fair, but headroom is generous. A 374-litre boot is fair for its size. If you need to load larger items, you can increase the boot space by putting down one or both of the 60/40 split-folding rear seats, which lay completely flat. As the centrepiece of the Kona N’s interior, a new 10-inch infotainment system also has a supplemental digital driver display. Showcasing this hot crossover’s true nature, an N mode provides track maps and lap times for a new level of entertainment. Further setting the Kona N apart from the rest of the lineup are Performance Blue accents on the steering wheel, shifter and seats. Customizable blue N buttons on the steering wheel allow drivers to quickly load preferences; the buttons can also be used to turn the lap timer on and off.

The Kona N also makes safety a major part of its fun formula by featuring a long list of advanced driver-assist systems. These systems include forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic avoidance, safe exit warning and adaptive cruise control.
