Thinking of towing with the updated Mazda CX-5.  Need the best-looking CX-5 Towbar available?

A significantly updated version of Mazda's stylish, spacious and dynamic SUV, the CX-5 has hit the roads. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 introduces Mi-Drive drive mode selection, enhanced driving dynamics, new styling and stronger grade differentiation, improvements to on-board packaging and practicality, and an expanded range of safety features.

The 2022 CX-5 incorporates the Mazda Intelligent Drive select (Mi-Drive), which enables you to select the most appropriate drive mode with one touch of a switch. Some model grades equipped with i-Activ AWD further benefit from an Off-Road Mode, which makes driving feel more natural on un-made and slippery surfaces.

Mazda’s next generation of Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture has now been applied to the 2022 CX-5, further evolving the bodyshell, suspension and seats to enhance ride comfort and reduce fatigue. Road noise has also been greatly reduced, particularly when driving on rough surfaces like gravel.

The front of the 2022 CX-5 features a powerful new, more three-dimensional grille and signature wing design. Both front and rear lamp clusters have also been restyled.   The refresh has smartened up what was already a good-looking SUV

The interior of the 2022 CX-5 now benefits from a wireless Qi phone charging tray in the centre console.
The design of the dash itself is fairly minimalist, despite Mazda keeping more practical physical controls for things like the climate settings for this facelift model, in contrast to many rivals choosing to move various functions to touchscreens.
And every CX-5 variant now comes equipped with a crystal clear head-up display that shows vital driving information as well as navigation and speed sign recognition.

A new 7.0-inch digital display nestled inside the instrument cluster also displays various trip and vehicle data.

The CX-5’s updated infotainment setup works out of a 10.25-inch (on the top models) digital instrument cluster, with an almost disarmingly simple layout navigated via a rotary controller.

Along with the additional trim levels and the interior/exterior refresh, Mazda has also made some adjustments to the suspension to improve both handling and road noise.  Choice of engines, starting with the 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, producing 115kW of power and 200Nm of torque.
Stepping up to the naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre engine, sees power outputs rise to 140kW/252Nm.
The turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol further boosts numbers to 170kWk/420Nm.

It feels spacious inside, especially in the front. Rear seat space is acceptable, but it’s not standout. The CX-5 has never been one of the most practical mid-sized SUVs, and this update – given it’s a refresh, not a proper overhaul – does nothing the change that.

Boot space is strong at 438-503 litres, and once the rear seats are dropped, a 1342 litre load space opens up. The two-piece, reversible loadspace floorboard and the tailgate sill are on the same level to aid loading. The safety regulatory body scored the CX-5 95 per cent for adult occupant protection, 80 per cent for child occupant, and 78 per cent for pedestrian protection.

The Mazda CX-5 range is fitted with a host of active safety technology including high- and low-speed autonomous emergency braking. It’s been enhanced for this update, according to Mazda, with the addition of night-time pedestrian detection. Lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, speed sign recognition and a driver attention monitor are standard across the range, as are rear parking sensors.

Mazda hasn’t messed too much with the successful CX-5 formula.  It’s not the most spacious or practical mid-sized SUV, but it remains one of the nicest in which to spend time.
