Towing review of the new MG S5 EV.  Maximum MG S5 EV towing capacity.  Need a MG S5 EV towbar?

The MG S5 EV is MG Motor’s latest attempt to cement its reputation as a maker of affordable, sensible electric cars that fit neatly into everyday family life. Positioned as a compact-to-midsize electric SUV, it effectively replaces the MG ZS EV while moving the brand a step up in refinement, technology and driving dynamics. Built on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, the same architecture used by the MG4, the S5 EV benefits from a more modern, rear-wheel-drive layout that immediately distinguishes it from many value-focused rivals.

From the outside, the MG S5 EV adopts a clean, contemporary design that avoids extremes. It is not flashy or overly futuristic, but it looks modern and well proportioned, with smooth body surfacing, slim LED lighting and an SUV stance that should appeal to a wide audience. The design feels deliberately inoffensive, which suits its role as a family car intended to age gracefully rather than chase trends.

Inside, the S5 EV shows clear progress over older MG models. The cabin is spacious and airy, helped by a flat floor and good wheelbase, making it comfortable for both front and rear passengers. Material quality has improved noticeably, with softer-touch surfaces and a more cohesive layout, although it still falls short of true premium brands. A large central touchscreen dominates the dashboard and handles most vehicle functions, paired with a digital instrument display. While the system is well equipped and visually modern, some users may notice occasional lag or slightly unintuitive menu structures compared with more established infotainment systems from rivals.

On the road, the MG S5 EV is one of the more engaging vehicles in its price bracket. Thanks to its rear-wheel-drive configuration, it feels balanced and predictable, particularly through corners, and avoids the torque steer often associated with front-wheel-drive electric SUVs. Acceleration is brisk rather than sporty, with the more powerful versions delivering confident overtaking performance and smooth, linear power delivery. The suspension setup leans toward the firmer side, which helps body control but can make rough or broken road surfaces feel a little unsettled, especially compared with more comfort-focused competitors.

The S5 EV is offered with different battery options, typically a smaller pack aimed at urban users and a larger battery designed for longer journeys. In real-world driving, the larger battery version delivers a practical range that comfortably covers daily commuting and medium-distance trips, with efficiency that compares well with similarly sized electric SUVs. Fast-charging capability is competitive, allowing rapid top-ups on longer journeys, although charging speeds tend to taper off more noticeably at higher battery percentages, which can extend charging stops if pushing beyond 80 percent.

Practicality is a strong point. The boot offers generous space for family use, shopping or luggage, and the rear seats fold to create a flat, usable load area. Rear passengers benefit from good legroom and headroom, making the S5 EV suitable for families or regular adult occupants in the back. Storage solutions throughout the cabin are sensible, if not particularly inventive.  Make your S5EV more practical by fitting a towbar – lug around extra gear, or take your bikes along on your next weekend away.

Safety is another area where the MG S5 EV performs well. It has achieved a high safety rating in European testing and comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring. These systems are generally effective, though some drivers may find them a little intrusive until settings are adjusted.

Where the MG S5 EV truly stands out is value. Pricing undercuts many established rivals while offering a high level of standard equipment, solid range, and a long manufacturer warranty that provides reassurance for buyers new to electric vehicles. While top-spec versions can approach the cost of more refined competitors, the lower and mid trims represent particularly strong value for money.

Depending on your region and exact specifications for the MG S5 EV the maximum towing weight — both braked and unbraked — is 750 kg across all variants and battery options. This means that whether you have the standard range or long range version, and whether you fit our tow bar or not, the legal maximum you can tow is 750 kg total trailer weight. The tow ball load (vertical load) is limited to a max of 75 kg

Towing up to 750 kg with the MG S5 EV generally means you can manage small trailers, lightweight caravans, motorcycle trailers, or small utility trailers, but you cannot tow larger caravans, horse floats, or heavier boat trailers that exceed this weight. The quoted towing capacity applies whether the trailer has its own brakes (“braked”) or not (“unbraked”), so if you do attach a trailer with brakes, the limit doesn’t increase beyond 750 kg.

While the capacity figures tell you what’s permissible, remember that electric vehicles typically experience a significant range reduction while towing, because the motor and battery work harder and the aerodynamic drag increases. This means that even though 750 kg is within the S5 EV’s capability, real-world range on a towing trip could be much lower than the standard WLTP estimates. Range impacts will vary with trailer shape, speed, load, and weather, but planning for a noticeably shorter range when towing is prudent.

In summary, the MG S5 EV is not the most luxurious, most comfortable or most technologically advanced electric SUV in its class, but it delivers a well-judged balance of space, efficiency, performance and price. It is best suited to buyers who want a practical, modern electric family car without paying a premium badge price, and who are willing to accept a few compromises in refinement in exchange for strong overall value.
