New 4th Generation X3 Towing Review. Maximum 4th Generation X3 towing capacity.  Need a BMW 4th Generation X3 G45 towbar.

Exterior Design and Styling

The 2025 BMW X3 (G45) marks a significant departure from its predecessor, both in form and proportion. While the basic silhouette remains familiar as a compact luxury SUV, BMW has infused the G45 with more presence and visual boldness. BMW has ensured the X3 makes a decent towcar, large towing capacity for its size.

Key design elements include:

  • A wider kidney grille with a new diagonal bar pattern, optionally illuminated for extra flair.
  • Slimmer headlights with inverted L-shaped DRLs, lending a sharper look.
  • A redesigned lower bumper with more sculpted air intakes, especially on M Sport and M50 trims.
  • Flush door handles and more refined character lines down the side for aerodynamic gain and a cleaner aesthetic.
  • A sleeker rear end, with redesigned tail lamps, a prominent roof spoiler, and a new diffuser-style lower bumper.
  • Available 19- to 21-inch alloy wheels, depending on trim and options.

The new G45 X3 is longer, wider, and slightly lower than before. Proportions appear more “planted” on the road, enhancing its road presence. BMW has reduced visual clutter, giving the G45 a monolithic, muscular vibe.  Can the new X3 tow?

Cabin Experience and Interior Design

The interior of the G45 is a leap forward in terms of interface and digital experience, though not without controversy.

Highlights:

  • BMW’s Curved Display (12.3" instrument cluster + 14.9" central touchscreen), now running iDrive 9. This is faster and more intuitive than iDrive 8, with tile-based “QuickSelect” shortcuts instead of nested menus.
  • A newly designed dashboard layout with integrated ambient lighting strips and optional backlit trim pieces.
  • Vastly reduced physical buttons — climate control and seat heating are now entirely touch-based, which may frustrate some users.
  • BMW offers three main upholstery themes:
    • Veganza (synthetic leather) with textured accents,
    • Alcantara for a sportier feel,
    • and Merino leather on higher trims or M models.
  • A flat-bottomed steering wheel, redesigned gear selector toggle, and updated center console.

The materials are generally upscale, but cost-cutting is noticeable in places — particularly the door panels and lower dash, which have more hard plastics than previous models. Build quality is solid, but the G45 leans more toward a tech-forward identity than traditional luxury.

Practicality:

  • Rear legroom is marginally improved due to a flatter rear floor and better packaging.
  • Boot space:
    • Standard: 570 liters
    • Plug-in hybrid (30e): 460 liters
    • Max capacity with seats folded: 1,700 liters

  • X3 20 xDrive:
    • 2.0L inline-4 turbo petrol + 48V system
    • Around 190 hp and ~300 Nm
    • Smooth for city driving but underwhelming in spirited acceleration
  • X3 20d xDrive:
    • 2.0L turbo diesel + 48V
    • Around 197 hp, strong low-end torque
    • Frugal and refined, still popular in European markets

Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)

  • X3 30e xDrive:
    • 2.0L turbo petrol + e-motor
    • Combined output: 299 hp, 450 Nm
    • 0–100 km/h in ~6.2 seconds
    • Electric-only range: ~80–90 km (WLTP), usable in real-world mixed driving
    • Charges via Type 2 AC (no DC fast charging)

Performance-Oriented

  • X3 M50 xDrive:
    • 3.0L inline-6 turbo + 48V mild-hybrid
    • Output: 381–398 hp, 0–100 km/h in around 4.6 seconds
    • Standard adaptive suspension, M differential, sport brakes
    • More subdued than a full M car, but very quick and balanced

All variants use BMW’s 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox and xDrive AWD as standard. The suspension has been retuned for better compliance, with a wider rear track and increased body stiffness helping improve cornering stability and ride quality.

Pricing and Market Position

As of mid-2025, pricing varies by market and powertrain, but BMW positions the G45 above the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 in tech and performance, but slightly below Mercedes GLC in perceived luxury. It’s a more dynamic and tech-focused offering, aimed at younger professionals and tech-savvy families.

Final Summary

The BMW X3 G45 is a strong step forward, with a bold design, a modern tech stack, and real improvements in ride quality and EV performance. The plug-in hybrid 30e is a sweet spot for many, balancing performance with real electric range, while the M50 delivers sports-car-like acceleration with daily usability.

However, traditional BMW loyalists may be disappointed by the cost-saving materials in the cabin and the minimalist user interface. If tactile luxury and classic BMW feedback are your top priorities, the outgoing G01 generation or an X5 might be more your style.
