The C40 is pure EV only. The C40 Recharge will compete against a growing number of small luxury EV SUVs.  Essentially it is as it looks, a coupe version of the existing XC40 with a lower roofline The two cars are in almost identical dimensions, both sharing the same 2702mm wheelbase and 1910mm mirrors-folded width, with the C40’s length of 4431mm representing an increase of just 6mm. The big difference is height, with the C40’s chopped roofline being 69mm lower than its sister.

The single motor, front-wheel-drive Volvo C40 Recharge has 228bhp available,  the twin AWD shares its major components with the existing XC40 Recharge and also the Polestar 2.  All C40 Recharge models come with two electric motors—one mounted in the front and one in the rear—which can deliver up to 402-hp; all-wheel drive is standard. A 201hp synchronous AC electric motor drives each axle, with power drawn from a 78kWh battery pack mounted beneath the floor. This supports DC fast charging at speeds of up to 150kW which gives a 80 percent charge in just 40 minutes. The onboard 11kW AC charger is intended for home use and is able to fully replenish the battery in around 11 hours.

The cabin of the C40 Recharge mirrors that of the XC40. That means a high seating position, clever storage solutions throughout the cabin, a large panoramic sunroof, and high-end materials and finishes. 

The C40 gets the latest Volvo driver instrument cluster, with clear graphics and a design that's easy to read at a glance. It can show a simplified dial layout or a map with navigation instructions.

The C40 has made the switch the Volvo’s Google-based Android infotainment system, this running a crisply rendered 9-inch portrait touchscreen.  Also unique to the C40 Recharge are backlit trim panels on the dashboard and doors that illuminate to reveal an abstract representation of a topography map. 

The interior space is comfortable, obviously, there is less headroom in the back, due to the roofline. A 31-litre under-bonnet frunk supplements the 413-litre boot.  Need to lug around more stuff, or take your bikes along?  Why not fit a towbar?  The C40 has a higher tow rating than the XC40 - 1800kgs.

As expected, Volvo offers a comprehensive set of driver-assistance features as standard on the C40 Recharge, including an adaptive cruise control system, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking. Every model gets an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system that not only recognises other cars but also cyclists, pedestrians and large animals. Traffic-sign recognition and Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which can intervene if you inadvertently cross the road's centre line and into the path of oncoming traffic, is also included. There are Isofix child seat points on the front passenger seat and outer rear seats.

If you love the Coupe, sporty looks and can accept the practicality penalties of the Volvo C40, it stacks up well compared with its immediate competition, especially on performance. It’s a refined and pleasant electric car to drive, justifying its premium price.
