Can the new Jaecoo J7 tow.  Maximum towing capacity of the J7 - Need a Jaecoo J7 Towbar?

The Jaecoo J7 is a mid-size SUV introduced in 2024 by Jaecoo, a premium sub-brand under Chery. It targets buyers seeking a refined and technologically advanced compact SUV at a competitive price point, blending modern aesthetics with a premium interior and robust feature set.

The exterior design is defined by a bold, vertically-slatted grille, sleek LED lighting, hidden door handles, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Its dimensions strike a balance between city drivability and interior space, measuring 4,500 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, and 1,680 mm in height, with a 2,672 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance stands at 200 mm, offering light off-road capability, though the 412-liter boot is somewhat compromised by the presence of a full-sized spare wheel. Need to carry more?  Why not fit our Jaecoo Invisible towbar.

The Jaecoo J7 offers towing capabilities that vary depending on the specific variant, configuration and market.

We are not sure whether due to powertrain or commercial reasons, maximum towing capacity differs greatly.  The 1st batches of the standard petrol-powered Jaecoo J7, have not been rated to tow (oversight maybe) – so if your Jeaoo has no rating only a bike carrier can be used.   Down the line, it is rumored the maximum towing capacity of the petrol variant will be between 1,300 kg and 1,750 kg when towing a braked trailer. The unbraked towing capacity is generally around 750 kg.

The Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) Variant or more commonly known as the Jaecoo J7 SHS, is rated for a maximum of 1575kgs.

It's important to note that towing capacities can vary based on factors such as the vehicle's configuration, equipment, and regional specifications. Therefore, it's advisable to consult the specific vehicle's manual or contact the manufacturer or dealer for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding towing capacities.

The Jaecoo J7 is equipped to handle moderate towing tasks, making it suitable for activities like towing small trailers, boats, or caravans, depending on the specific variant and configuration.

Under the hood, the J7 is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine delivering 147 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Two drivetrain options are offered: front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD). The FWD variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds, while the AWD version does it in 11.4 seconds. Fuel efficiency is respectable, with official figures around 7.5 to 8.0 liters per 100 kilometers, depending on the configuration.

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is set to significantly raise the performance stakes. It combines a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 347 horsepower and 525 Nm of torque. The PHEV includes an 18.3 kWh battery, providing up to 90 kilometers of pure electric range and an estimated total range of up to 1,200 kilometers. Charging times are also competitive, taking roughly 80 minutes with an AC charger and just 20 minutes for a 30 to 80 percent top-up on a DC fast charger.

Inside, the J7 delivers a premium cabin experience. Materials include soft-touch plastics, leatherette surfaces, and metallic accents. The centerpiece is a vertically oriented 14.8-inch infotainment screen, complemented by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Additional features include a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, and a premium eight-speaker Sony sound system.

On the safety and driver assistance front, the J7 comes equipped with an impressive suite of features. These include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert with automatic braking, a 360-degree camera system, and a driver monitoring system. These features contribute to a five-star safety rating in regulatory crash testing.

The Jaecoo J7’s strengths are centered on its contemporary styling, high safety and technology levels, and overall value proposition. Weak points include limited rear legroom and boot space, a user interface that may take time to get used to, and a transmission that can feel slightly hesitant during aggressive driving.

In summary, the Jaecoo J7 stands out in the crowded SUV market with its strong combination of design, tech, and safety at a price point that undercuts many traditional rivals. It’s well suited for buyers looking for a luxurious experience without the premium brand price tag.
