About to arrive in Australia - the NEW Skoda Kodiaq. Can it tow? Need a towbar for your Skoda Kodiaq?
The NEW Kodiaq covers all the bases by not only being comfortable, practical and good to drive, but it’s also relatively cheap to run, easy to live with and solidly built.
The Skoda Kodiaq is the Czech firm's first large SUV, and comes as a five or seven-seater. Yet despite being in a new niche for Skoda, the Kodiaq boasts all the qualities we expect from the maker, so it’s spacious, well equipped and offers good value for money. In many ways it's the SUV equivalent of the firm's Skoda Superb- much like the smaller Yeti is the equivalent to the Octavia.
As the Kodiaq is the SUV equivalent of the Superb, it's no surprise that the trims are similar.
Cramming remarkable space into a relatively compact car is far from the Škoda Kodiaq's only selling point. It drives well, and makes for a capable tow car.
The engine and gearbox combination best-suited to regular towing is the range-topping 190PS (187bhp) diesel 4x4 DSG automatic (this engine isn't available with a manual gearbox). With 295lb ft of torque, it has enough pulling power to cope with a heavy caravan, although it can't match the brawn of a Sorento or Santa Fe with their 325lb ft.
On snaking mountain roads, the engine delivers strong and determined acceleration. It shouldn't have trouble with any suitably matched caravan.
The heaviest version of the Kodiaq with a kerbweight of 1798kg, including 75kg for the driver, gives an 85% match figure of 1528kg.
Five-seat models have a legal towing limit of 2500kg and a noseweight of 140kg. Seven seats drops the legal towing limit to 2000kg and the noseweight to 100/80kg.
NOTE: Due to a technical issue the 150 HP 4x4 Diesel "Manual" 7 seat variant 2017/18 of the Kodiaq has not received type approval for the fitting of a tow bar at all. Auto DSG version is OK. 150 HP 5 seater is OK for towing so is the 190 HP 4x4 Diesel "Manual" 7 seat.
The Kodiaq is claimed to offer more interior space – at 1793mm in length – to embarrass its two big-selling Korean rivals.
With its dimensions, the ŠKODA KODIAQ is at the upper end of the compact car segment. It is 4,697 mm long, 1,882 mm wide and 1,676 mm tall (including roof rails); its wheelbase measures 2,791 mm. The KODIAQ is based on Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) in which strict lightweight construction plays an important role.
Boot: With a volume of 720 to 2,065 l (with the rear seats folded down), the ŠKODA KODIAQ offers the largest boot within its class. If the optional folding passenger seat is chosen, the SUV can transport items up to 2.80 m long.
An innovation for the portfolio is Trailer Assist: when the ŠKODA KODIAQ is towing a trailer, the system takes over steering when reversing slowly. Additionally, while reversing, the new Manoeuvre Assist function will brake as soon as an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle. The system is controlled using an enhanced function of the rear parking sensors. Check for PR code 1D8 or PR 1M5; means your Kodiaq is prewired for towing.
